I call this the modern Italianate because it honors the Italianate style of the neighborhood on the exterior but has modern elements on the interiors. This home probably has stretched me the most of all the homes we have built. Italiante by nature is outside of my wheelhouse. But I wanted to build a house that matched the neighborhood’s character on the exterior while adding in a little more of my personal style on the inside. We renovated two Italianate homes last year (you can check those before and after pics here and here) but I’ve never had to design the exterior of an Italianate from scratch.
I wanted to exaggerate some of the traditional exterior features of the home to give it an updated feel. Also, I think when you go larger for things like doors, lights, stairs, and columns, you can make a home feel a little larger and more luxurious.
In the last year, my personal style and taste have grown a lot. I think I’m transitioning away from traditional into more of a California boho modern style. I think that’s reflected in the interior of this home. Anyways! Enough blabbing. You guys came here for the pics! Happy scrolling! And as always the sources are at the bottom of the page.
